MCH youth offer help through UMCOR

Methodist Children’s Home students and staff gave of their time and personal money to make UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) health kits for Haitians affected by the recent catastrophic earthquake.

The MCH Student Council organized the project in conjunction with Cogdell United Methodist Church in Waco. Our youth asked for monetary pledges from teachers and even gave from their own allowances to raise money for the kits. Our youth raised hundreds of dollars to pay for the health kits. Here are some photos from the afternoon they spent preparing the kits.

Tyler office shares MCH hope at local expo event

Our Tyler Outreach office participated in the Real Women's Expo at the Harvey Convention Center in Tyler on February 9. The booth was decorated in a Valentine's Day theme and staff were on hand to share information about becoming foster parents. They also shared information about the Waco Campus, Waxahachie campus, Boys Ranch and other programs such as Partnership in Parenting and Grandparents as Parents.

The event was widely advertised and covered by local news channels, as well as local publications. Pictured are Traci Wagner, Tyler supervisor, Jerushah DuToit, Tyler caseworker, and Lisa Hall, Eastern region secretary. Additional photos and coverage of the event are available in the online Spotted section of the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Our thanks to Traci Wagner for submitting her photo and summary of this great event.

The Tyler office definitely received some snow this past week. Here is a photo of the snow stacking up on the Tyler Outreach Office sign.

Youth travel on Civil Rights Road Trip

MCH youth had a unique opportunity to personally connect with civil rights history over Martin Luther King, Jr. day in January. Eleven youth from Methodist Children's Home attended the four-day Central Texas Conference Civil Rights Road Trip.

Our young people joined with youth and adults from five other churches in the Central Texas Conference for the trip organized by Steve Heyduck, Methodist Children's Home chaplain.

The trip took youth by bus to several historic civil rights locations such as Little Rock Central High School, The National Civil Rights Museum, The Birmingham Civil Rights Museum, The National Voting Rights Museum, The Edmund Pettus Bridge, 16th Street Baptist Church and several other sites.

All of our young people were profoundly affected by the sites, but the most emotional moment of the trip came when some of our youth lead the group in a silent march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. In 1965, peaceful civil rights marchers were violently confronted by law enforcement officials on the bridge.

For all of our youth, the trip was a profound reminder of the sacrifices made by civil rights leaders and protesters. Following are some pictures from the trip.
